After releasing a collection of limited edition non-fungible tokens (NFTs) within the military shooter game Ghost Recon Breakpoint in December, it should have been considered a watershed moment in the history of the gaming community. French video game publisher Ubisoft, which is behind popular franchises Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry, was the first major publisher to include NFTs in a title, which could have marked a watershed moment for the use of blockchain technology in video games.
The result was a spectacular miscalculation, with swift repercussions. Several players expressed dissatisfaction with the 600 hours of playing time (equivalent to nearly a month of 24-hour-a-day play) required to earn just one free item–a cosmetic helmet for in-game avatars. One report stated that only 15 NFTs were purchased for a total of $400, indicating that attempts to generate revenue were futile.
WHAT IS BLOCKCHAIN GAMING?
It is a method in which the digital items contained within video games–things such as collectibles, weapons, and cosmetic skins–are treated as real-world assets, similar to stocks or bonds, and are issued in the form of non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NFTS AND NFT GAMES?
Control. A publisher’s inability to shut down a title or remove features from games does not mean that blockchain assets are no longer relevant. If there is enough demand for them, the in-game NFT items can survive beyond the lifespans of the games and retain their value.
WHERE DID IT ALL START?
In the early 2000s, online multiplayer games such as Runescape and World of Warcraft demonstrated the value of robust in-game economies and spawned grey markets in which consumers were willing to spend real money in order to unofficially purchase game accounts or items on third-party websites such as eBay.
STATE OF PLAY:
Currently, the rules are in the process of being finalized. In Casares’ opinion, today’s blockchain games are “very simple and crude.” He points out that, in contrast to titles from major publishers such as Epic Games (Fortnite) or Activision (Call of Duty: Warzone), blockchain games are less sophisticated and have less interactivity than current offerings. As other blockchain platforms come to fruition, Ethereum, the most widely used blockchain platform, is getting ready to launch a more robust 2.0 version.
THE DOWNSIDE?
According to Linden, there is still a great deal to be worked out. As a result, some blockchains consume more electricity than certain countries, putting a strain on the environment and resulting in premiums in the form of “gas fees,” which are the money it costs a user to access the network. Users gain and lose assets as a result of using the play-to-earn model, which raises the question of whether gambling laws should be applied.
NEXT BIG THING?
Whatever happens, it will be determined by whether and how quickly the major game publishers fill their pipelines. At this point, there has been little enthusiasm. For Linden, the hesitance harkens back to the early days of mobile gaming, when users scoffed at new abridged versions of the titles that were being released.
