Blockchain based COVID-19 certification rolls out in S. Korea

백신 예방접종 증명서에 ‘블록체인’ 접목…위변조 방지

South Korea will begin using blockchain technology for COVID-19 vaccination certification starting Thursday.
The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency said the certificates are accessible via a mobile application, from where proof of vaccination can be shown when required.
Until now, inoculated individuals had to print certificates or hold onto a file, which are susceptible to forgery, to prove they received the COVID-19 shots.
However, technology from South Korean company, Blockchain Labs, prevents certificates from being forged or for personal information being leaked.
While exact use has yet to be set in stone, the government wishes to utilize the system to shorten quarantine periods for the vaccinated and to provide flexibility for the fully inoculated.
